George Garner

 George Garner writes:

After going on terminal leave in November, 1995 due to the declining health of our daughter, Tammie, who went home to be with the Lord a month later from Lakeland Regional Medical Center, I took a chaplaincy position at the hospital followed by instructor, Emmaus Baptist College, and eventually President of The Blessed Hope Foundation, a Christian publishing foundation, and military chaplaincy associate endorser for the American Baptist Association. I continue to serve in these positions. Until recently, Carolyn and I served as Directors of the College and Career ministry of our church. Life has been filled with joys and sorrows, but the highlights of God’s grace are found in being blessed with the love of children and my wife, Carolyn, and being elected by my denomination to preach the annual message at our state association. Health is good and I will always be thankful for the chaplains and chaplain assistants that stood by me with love and encouragement in the midst of a personal storm.

Since retirement from both the practice of psychology and the clergy, I have served as a psychology lecturer for several years on a number of cruise lines. I have, on occasion, served as Chaplain. I will serve on the Azamara Cruise line during Christmas and New Years in 2013 sailing from Singapore to Myanmar (Burma).

I have been an active Rotarian for 30 years and have been involved in Thailand on a number of clean water projects. I also sing in a male chorus that performs selections of music ranging from Opera to Cowboy sons. We typically are on tour in Europe every three years. Our last overseas choir was in the summer of 2012 when we, among other venues, sang at a Mass in the Vatican.

Upon retiring from the Army in 2004, I joined the faculty of Southwestern Baptist Theological Seminary, Fort Worth, as Associate Professor of Pastoral Ministry where I taught pastoral and chaplaincy ministry courses until 2010, when I received an appointment to the faculty of Dallas Baptist University, Dallas, as Professor of Christian Ministry/Director, Chaplaincy Program. DBU offers a 72 sem. hr. curriculum of graduate theological studies–MA Christian Ministry-Chaplaincy. We are happy to report that we have Army Reserve and Texas Army National Guard Chaplain Candidates in the program, with others presently being recruited and processed.

I have served five interim pastorates and currently serve on the Board of Directors of the DFW International Airport Interfaith Chaplaincy and as a volunteer crisis response chaplain with Texas Baptist Men. I am engaged in dissertation research for a D.Min. at Midwestern Baptist Theological Seminary. My wife completed a B.A. from DBU, a M.A. in Marriage and Family Counseling from SWBTS, and is currently working on a M.A. Christian Ministry/M.A. Theological Studies at DBU. I deployed to Afghanistan in support of a BCT in the south of the country. My wife Michele works at the Waco Regional Office of the VA serving as the Management Analyst for cultural change within the agency.
